Outdoor digital menu boards: screens that hold up in the sun

An indoor menu board is 350 nits. An outdoor one needs about 10 times that. Samsung's open-air OH46B runs at 3,500 nits and is rated 24/7, and that brightness is the whole difference between a menu people read and a grey rectangle.

Outdoor and window menu board screens, priced

First decide where the screen lives. Open air needs an outdoor-rated panel. Behind a window, facing out, needs a window display: indoor-built, but bright enough to beat the sun on the glass.

Open air: patios and walk-up walls

The OH46B and OH55A-S are Samsung's open-air panels: 3,500 nits, Full HD, listed for -30 to 50 °C. They're heavy. The OH46B is 36 kg and 85 mm deep, so the wall or post has to be built for it.

They also draw real power: 430 W typical for the OH46B, against 121 W for an indoor 43". Run a dedicated circuit, not a tap off the patio lights.

Walk-up windows and storefront glass

A lot of what owners call an outdoor menu board is really a window board: the screen sits inside, the customer reads it from the sidewalk. That's the OM series. The OM46B is 4,000 nits in Full HD; the OM55B trades a little brightness for 4K at 3,000 nits.

Don't put an indoor QBC in a window. At 350 nits it's gone by mid-morning on a south-facing street. CrownTV's published all-in price for a 46" or 55" window display is $3,850 per screen (checked October 22, 2026).

Drive-thru lanes are a separate job

A drive-thru board isn't a screen you hang; it's a pedestal with a footing, conduit run under the lot, often a speaker post and a confirmation screen. That's an install project with permits, so we don't sell it as a kit here. CrownTV scopes those through our restaurant install site.

If your "drive-thru" is really a walk-up window with a short line of cars, the OM window displays above often do the job for a fraction of the work.

Outdoor menu boards: questions

How bright does an outdoor digital menu board need to be?

An outdoor digital menu board needs at least 2,500 nits and we'd buy 3,000 or more, because Samsung's open-air OH46B runs at 3,500 nits while an indoor QBC is 350, and a screen anywhere near the indoor number goes gray and unreadable at noon in direct sun.

Can I put an indoor screen in a weatherproof box?

You can, but a sealed box traps heat and an indoor panel is still too dim for daylight. By the time you add a ventilated enclosure and live with a washed-out screen, the outdoor-rated panel was the better buy.

What temperatures can an outdoor menu board handle?

Samsung lists the OH46B and OH55A-S for operation from -30 to 50 °C. The window-facing OM models are listed for 0 to 40 °C, because they live indoors behind glass.

Do you do drive-thru menu boards?

Drive-thru lanes are an install project: footings, conduit, a weatherproof pedestal and often a speaker post. Our install team handles those through restaurantdigitalsignage.com.

Can a window menu board show content both ways?

Yes. The Samsung OM55N-DS is double-sided, one face to the street and one into the store. Pressed Juicery's Penn Station kiosk does the same job with an OM55B in a custom birch enclosure.

What does an installed window menu board cost?

CrownTV publishes all-in window display prices from $3,850 per screen at 46" and 55", including the display, mount, player, install and first-year software (checked October 22, 2026). Open-air outdoor installs are quoted.
